Severe ME/CFS Community: You Are Seen, Heard and Valued

by | Aug 8, 2024 | BHC News, Severe and Very Severe ME/CFS

Dear Community,

Although today is designated for remembering and reflecting on those with Severe ME/CFS, please know that you are in my thoughts every day. I have a photograph of a piece of artwork submitted for ME Awareness Day a couple of years ago. It is entitled “Forget ME Not” and was created by someone named Vanessa, who described herself as bedbound and suffering from Severe ME.

This disease can be incredibly isolating, but please remember that you are not alone. There are many people who come together each week to work and advocate on your behalf. Some efforts are behind the scenes, while others are more visible, but progress is being made. I began my journey with ME/CFS when my daughter became ill nine years ago. When it seemed there was little help available from the medical community, I discovered the Bateman Horne Center. They not only helped me understand my daughter’s disease, but also taught me how to assist others.

Progress feeding change. Our educational program teaches healthcare professionals about the full spectrum of ME/CFS, including those with Severe ME. Scientific findings continue to reveal more about the physiological underpinnings and validate clinical knowledge. These tangible signs of progress feed my hope that all individuals affected by ME/CFS will have access to informed care, leading to an improved quality of life, until a cure is found.

The world is listening. ME/CFS is becoming less of an unknown term. Papers are being written, and research is being conducted. Although the progress is not as rapid as I would like, the wheels are turning. I am allowing myself the space to believe we will see meaningful change soon.

The most inspirational people I know are those with ME/CFS. It is a privilege and an honor to serve this community. Together, we strive to ensure that Severe ME is understood and that patients receive the support and care they deserve, so that no one is ever forgotten.

We see you and we care about you.

Sincerely,
