Research Volunteer Agreement

Please read the Volunteer Agreement!

Bateman Horne Center Research Program conducts many different types of clinical research to investigate how ME/CFS and FM affect diagnosis, treatment and quality of life. Study types can include research on biomarkers, survey research, clinical trials and quality of life research.

There are benefits to volunteering to participate in research.  Participation may advance knowledge about ME/CFS, FM and related diseases and help to improve the health and well-being of those suffering with these diseases. Volunteering for research helps ensure there are enough participants to make meaningful conclusions, helps ensure research studies are completed and helps gain knowledge about diagnosis and treatment for these diseases. Of course there is a chance that there may be no benefit to you or society by participating in research, either now or in the future.

There is a small risk that the your information may be released without your permission, but we take many steps to keep your personal information private, secure, and confidential. If you feel that you are getting too many emails, you may always remove yourself from our email list. There is no cost to you to participate in research at Bateman Horne Center.

Anyone between the ages of 18-65 years can volunteer for research. You do not have to be diagnosed with a health condition to volunteer.

Participating in research is easy! It should take less than 10 minutes. If you decide to sign up, you will be asked a few questions about yourself, like your age and contact information. You will also be able to enter details about your health. All this information will be stored securely and will be kept confidential as described below. You do not have to answer all questions about your health, only the information that you choose to enter. You can request to be removed from this research volunteer list if you wish.

Once you register your information is stored in a secure database. We will send you an email about studies that you may choose to participate in. All these studies will already be reviewed by an Institutional Review Board (IRB). The IRB reviews the risks and benefits of each research study. Research volunteers will also receive a monthly eNewsletter about the Bateman Horne Center and information related to research participation. You can choose to ‘unsubscribe’ from the monthly newsletters at any time.

We will send you an email with basic information about a research study. These emails may include follow-up surveys to help us find out if you qualify for the study. If you want to learn more about the study, you can respond by clicking “yes”. A “yes” response will provide more details about the study and if you are interested in participating, there will be a link to a survey for you to complete. Remember that by registering you do not have to take part in any study.

Bateman Horne Center will perform quality and evaluation metrics on an on-going basis. Part of that process may involve collecting non-identifiable information about your contact and enrollment status in researchers’ studies.

Bateman Horne Center Disclaimer. Bateman Horne Center does not promise that we will contact you about studies. If we do contact you about participating in research, we cannot promise that you will qualify for the research. It also does not mean that Bateman Horne Center recommends that you participate in that study.

How is my information protected? Bateman Horne Center respects your privacy and takes privacy very seriously. Your personal information will be sent and stored in a secure system. Please see Bateman Horne Center Privacy Statement for more details. We will never sell, rent, or lease your personal information.

What if I change my mind? If you change your mind you can send us an email and we will remove your personal information from Bateman Horne Center database. Biological samples, information shared and any results generated prior to changing your mind will not be removed.

By agreeing to this Volunteer Agreement, you willingly agree to let Bateman Horne Center use your registration information to contact you about participating in research.
