At BHC, we believe that no one should suffer alone —and no clinician should be without the tools to help.
That belief drove us to create the Clinical Care Guide for ME/CFS, Long COVID, and related Infection-Associated Chronic Conditions. It’s also the driving force behind our One Guide. One Goal. summer campaign to put this essential resource into the hands of healthcare providers across the globe.
What Is the Clinical Care Guide?
The Clinical Care Guide for ME/CFS, Long COVID, and Infection-Associated Chronic Conditions is a free, evidence-informed resource developed by the Bateman Horne Center in collaboration with leading clinicians, researchers, and patient experts. It was created to support healthcare providers in delivering informed, individualized care to patients with complex, multisystem illnesses.
The guide offers:
-
Structured diagnostic guidance based on current clinical consensus criteria and symptom presentation
-
Clinical management strategies for core features, including post-exertional malaise (PEM), orthostatic intolerance, cognitive impairment, unrefreshing sleep, and more
-
Care planning guidance that addresses person-centered care and the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration
-
Special sections on pediatric care, severe and very severe illness, caregiver supports, and documenting disability
Whether used as a starting point or to deepen clinical knowledge, the guide helps providers recognize patterns, avoid harm, and respond more effectively to the needs of patients with ME/CFS, Long COVID, and related conditions.
Why Now?
New research underscores the urgent need for clinical education. A recent Journal of General Internal Medicine study—co-led by BHC’s Dr. Suzanne Vernon—found that 4.5% of adults infected with COVID-19 now meet diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS, a rate nearly eight times higher than in those never infected.
Despite these numbers, most providers still receive little or no training on ME/CFS or Long COVID. The Clinical Care Guide was created to help close that gap.
Why It’s Free—and Why We Need You
BHC is committed to distributing the guide at no cost to providers. But scaling access—through direct outreach, digital tools, and accredited education—requires community support.
Make a $5 donation today to help us reach our $500,000 goal by Aug. 31. To keep the momentum going, share with five (or more!) friends. With your support, we can reach thousands of providers and patients to help transform care for millions of people living with post-infectious illness.
You Can Make a Difference
If you’ve experienced the impact of these conditions—or simply believe in our work—please consider donating and spreading the word.
“A guide in every hand. A provider who understands. That’s our goal—because every person living with ME/CFS or Long COVID deserves a clinician who sees them, believes them, and knows how to help.”
— Tahlia Ruschioni, Executive Director, Bateman Horne Center
