Occasionally, we’ll highlight and summarize a few of them for you, like this one:

Could Difference in Gut Bacteria Help Explain ME/CFS Symptoms?
Suzanne D. Vernon, PhD

gut microbiomeIrritable bowel symptoms are common (although not case-defining) in ME/CFS patients.  Several studies have been conducted to understand whether the differences in gut bacteria could help explain these symptoms. A small trial conducted in Sweden showed that a certain probiotic relieved some ME/CFS symptoms. Over the past 10 years we’ve learned that the bacteria in our gut – called the microbiome – is important for health. These trillions of gut bacteria train our immune systems and are essential for metabolism. It is important that the gut bacteria have the right composition and diversity to help maintain health.

In a paper published by Giloteaux et al in the open access journal Microbiome, they compared the gut microbiome from 48 ME/CFS patients and 39 healthy controls. Similar to other microbiome studies they found that the composition of the gut bacteria was less diverse compared to healthy controls giving bacteria that can be bad and cause inflammation in the gut an advantage. This also corresponded with increased inflammatory markers in the blood of ME/CFS patients.
